Visual Studio Express 2010/2012 available "free"

News Feb 2014 - Microsoft have released the Community versions of Visual Studio which are free and work with Visual Micro. This thread is no longer applicable.

Microsoft has published "Express" versions of Visual Studio, both 2012 and 2010 editions.  These are 'free' for download from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/downloads#d-2012-express

The apparent intent is to (re)capture the student/hobbyist/newbie audience from Java, Oracle, Atmel, et al. by offering starter versions of VS.  This might be less aversive for the Arduino folk than the WebsiteSpark program although registering for the latter is really quite straightforward and offers a more complete toolset.

The Express versions are good for a "30 day trial" after which uses have to request a "Free" license.  I'm going to try them out with VM and will report any problems.

VM does not work with Express as you cannot use addins with express.

Sure 'nuff.  I just tried VM with Visual Studio Express for C#.  VSE runs OK but the VM add-on is nowhere to be seen.  Trying to start an existing VS/VM solution results in a rather stern looking licensing message.

Dead end.

Reminder for everyone. The pro version of Visual Studio is available free for 3+ years.

Read more here http://www.visualmicro.com/page/Offer-Visual-Studio-Professional-Free-For-3-Year...

The express version does not support third party extensions so will not work with the plugin
