Hi Chris,

I run all Arduino versions on windows 8.1 without any issues.

The problem you are having with Visual Micro is a small confusion over Arduino version numbers. 

It is confusing at the moment that Arduino have two IDE versions with similar numbers 1.0.5 and 1.5.7

With 1.0.5-r2 you are using a 1.0.x Arduino version and not 1.5.x

In Visual Micro please remove the location you have set for Arduino 1.5.x and instead add the location to Arduino 1.0.x

Tim, I forgot to add that after loading Atmel Studio 6.2 I can click 'File' < 'Open' < 'Sketch Project' and see all my Arduino Sketch Files but immediately after clicking one to open it I then get the Warning Box with the statement " Unable to create an Arduino project for ATmel Studio".

At the top dead centre is "Visual Micro"
In the box dead centre is  the statement as the subject
Underneath at the bottomright is the only other text which is simply "OK"

First of all; When I started Vis Studio for the first time I was asked Whwere was the Aeduino IDE., Installed, I answered:
C:\Program Files\Arduino
Then I was asked do you have a preference where your Sketchies are located, I answered:
D:\Electronics\Arduino\Sketchbook
This later decision was take because and although not impossible for other programs to access C:\Program Files they are set as Read Only by MS., Windows 8, whereas my [MyDocuments] d:\ files are accessible straight out of the box by anyone as R/W.

There is no Arduino IDE., installed in D:\Electronics\Ardujino\*.*

That's how it is and that's the way I set it up; hope that there is something there that smells of a rat to someone that knows these issues.

When the "New Project" dialog opens enter the name Test123. Please do not alter the path/location just give the name and press OK

I do not get the page as picture in the instructions at the link you provided. I have attached a screen dump of the actual page I get. This follows File>New>Arduino Sketch.

1) Thanks that does of course work.

2) But you know that was a bit confusing as most people are used to picking NEW in a File dropdown box to form a new file that was the natural way to go and then when it specified "Arduino Sketch" you intuitively think you are on the right track.

3) The getting started instructions I have state From the "File>New" menu select "Arduino project". Arduino project is not present so you go intuitively to the VM logo & "Sketch project" thinking this is where VM., want you to go.

I guess it's all a piece of misadventure by direction.
& I'm still struggling I'm afraid as when I ask to open an existing Arduino Sketch I am told by message box " Unable to create........................................etc".

My getting started pages state ""File>New" menu select "Arduino project" once more I havent got these descriptions available to me however Clicking "File> VM logo "Open Progect" immediately provides my open Arduino Sketchies file but clicking any one of the programs provides my old friend the message box stating " Unable to create........................................etc".

So I'm getting there but O' so very slowly. Can you help in this matter now, P L E A S E?

Must confess that the Sketchbook position in D; was chosen at a time when I could not seem to gain permission to save in C:\PF.,\Arduino. As related earlier I have now have those permissions so I will move Sktchbook to C:\PF.,\Arduino and I will let you know what happens.   

I did load up your getting started link but didn't notice any difference from the one I was using. Apologoies. I will print it out and use that instead of the one that I have in current use.

I have finally found the definitive answer to my issues.

During attempts to do this and that I decided to back refer to directory addresses that Atmel Studio (AS.,) was refering. In so doing I also decided to uninstall my Arduino IDE [Ex., Adafruit]. Having done so I downloaded in 'free fall' as it were, the Arduibo IDE., all as the request in Atmel in Tools>Options>Applications and Locations.

In short; I found:
One of the Arduino downloads had landed up in C:\Program Files. Nothing suspicious in that you may say, but hang on,so did I; but for heavenns sake aren't all our Program Filess maintained in c:\Program Files (x86) in Win 8.x. Well I never so they are too. 
I deleted everything to do with Atmel & Arduino in c:\P_F and  then went into Atmel Studio and re configured eveything into C:\P_F (x86) and Bingo every thihg works, straight out of the box exactly as it should.
So now I feel a little bit less like the dummy I was and more like the newby that i am.
Thank you for all your nagging and help, I am sure that without your help I would still be floundering about just as I am attempting to write programs. My advise: Don't become an administrator of programmers; you would be sure to run into me and my kind............for sure.
