"Unable to create Arduino Project for Atmel studio".

Sirs,
I get the above message in a warning box whenever  attempt to open or save a file.  I have followed the "getting started" pages and attempted to answer all IDE & Sketch locations to the best of my ability.

I have read the previous request to this same error message but having checked the existing Arduino IDE., version is that which I have typed into VM., I can proceed no further. My version of the Arduino IDE., is 1.0.5-r2 and this is the location that VS., has been directed.

So: you then post questions answered here in blue italics:
1) What path(s) have you configured against the Arduino 1.5.x application? My IDE is as below at C:\Program Files\Arduino
2) Which version of the Arduino Ide does 1.5.x point to? Ver. 1.0.5-r2
3) Have you ever opened the version of the Arduino the path points to? Yes and immediately prior to this eMail as a check
4) Is this your first installation of Visual Micro? Not an upgrade from an older version? In my attempt to get the two programs to work I have installed VM., many  times. I cannoty for some reason run Arduinos' latest 1.5 IDE as it refuses to run in my windows 8.1 OS, I have therefore use Messrs., Adadfruits' Arduino IDE download which does run. Before doing so I have run CClear in order to clear out old unused registry files

There were two other similar requests i] I found to be about a program I have not heard of the other  ii] I found to be unfinished and therefore conclusive.

I hope I do not trouble you unnecessarily.

I hope that somewhere in the text I have made a comment that allows you to recognise my issue.

Thank you or reading my request for help, I am,
yours, ChrisPSR

Hi Chris,

I run all Arduino versions on windows 8.1 without any issues.

The problem you are having with Visual Micro is a small confusion over Arduino version numbers.

It is confusing at the moment that Arduino have two IDE versions with similar numbers 1.0.5 and 1.5.7

With 1.0.5-r2 you are using a 1.0.x Arduino version and not 1.5.x

In Visual Micro please remove the location you have set for Arduino 1.5.x and instead add the location to Arduino 1.0.x

Thanks

Hello and thanks for the reply howsoever if you read my first eMail I said that prior to writing that email and in answer  to your question put to a previous writer where you asked and I answered:
"3) Have you ever opened the version of the Arduino the path points to? Yes and immediately prior to this eMail as a check"
My issue with Arduinos' 1.5 version unfortunately seems t o be deeper than I can easily understand as after the first occasion I killed off windows 8.1 and with much work and time loss I re-installed windows 8 plus all my necessary programs I use in addition to the OS.,, updated to Win 8.1 but still failed to be able to run the Arduino IDE., download which is why I am using Messrs Adafruits' download of 1.0.5-r2.
I wonder if you have any further points I might try?

Tim, I forgot to add that after loading Atmel Studio 6.2 I can click 'File' < 'Open' < 'Sketch Project' and see all my Arduino Sketch Files but immediately after clicking one to open it I then get the Warning Box with the statement " Unable to create an Arduino project for ATmel Studio".

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the info.

Visual Micro works with all Arduino versions so this problem is related to your machine, maybe a permissions problem. In my experience there is never a need to re-install windows or atmel studio.

Can you please confirm the fill name of the folder that appears when you click File >Open > Sketch Project

Thanks

Hi

The message box appears:
At the top dead centre is "Visual Micro"
In the box dead centre is  the statement as the subject
Underneath at the bottomright is the only other text which is simply "OK"

Sorry I was not clear.

I am trying to understand the location on your computer that is displayed when the Open Sketch dialog appears.

For example: c:\documents\arduino

Thanks

Ok.

First of all; When I started Vis Studio for the first time I was asked Whwere was the Aeduino IDE., Installed, I answered:
C:\Program Files\Arduino
Then I was asked do you have a preference where your Sketchies are located, I answered:
D:\Electronics\Arduino\Sketchbook
This later decision was take because and although not impossible for other programs to access C:\Program Files they are set as Read Only by MS., Windows 8, whereas my [MyDocuments] d:\ files are accessible straight out of the box by anyone as R/W.

There is no Arduino IDE., installed in D:\Electronics\Ardujino\*.*

That's how it is and that's the way I set it up; hope that there is something there that smells of a rat to someone that knows these issues.

Cheers, Chris

Tim,
Just tried loading a file via: File>Open File> C:\Program Files\Arduino\Sketchies\Array_Sketch\Array_Sketch.ino

I was delivered up the message all as before "Could not etc":
BUT the file opened up for editing
BUT All the drop down boxes were blank other than the one carrying the IDE., version ie., Arduino 1.0.x and that includes the box where the code type can be chosen in this case C/C++.

Chris

I haven't tried doing anything else

Hi Chris,

Please follow this guide to see if you can create a project. Notice in this page the 2nd part applies to Atmel Studio

http://www.visualmicro.com/page/User-Guide.aspx?doc=Create-New-project.html

When the "New Project" dialog opens enter the name Test123. Please do not alter the path/location just give the name and press OK

Thanks

OK. Thanks for the help.

I follow through the instructions for just a short while only.

Hit File>New>Create Sketch> Message box opens asking for name of Project>Hit enter> Message Box opens stating "Unable to create Arduino Project for Atmel Studio" all as this issue.

Sorry if I seem to be going around in circles but unfortunately the loop wont break out for reasons I can't understand.

I made C:\Program files\Arduino and all subsidiary files Shared files and you can now definitely save to that location. So I do not think it is a permission issue.

Help! Chris

Tim,
I do not get the page as picture in the instructions at the link you provided. I have attached a screen dump of the actual page I get. This follows File>New>Arduino Sketch.

Cheers

You have to click

File>New>Project

NOT File>New>Sketch Project

Tim,

1) Thanks that does of course work.

2) But you know that was a bit confusing as most people are used to picking NEW in a File dropdown box to form a new file that was the natural way to go and then when it specified "Arduino Sketch" you intuitively think you are on the right track.

3) The getting started instructions I have state From the "File>New" menu select "Arduino project". Arduino project is not present so you go intuitively to the VM logo & "Sketch project" thinking this is where VM., want you to go.

I guess it's all a piece of misadventure by direction.
& I'm still struggling I'm afraid as when I ask to open an existing Arduino Sketch I am told by message box " Unable to create........................................etc".

My getting started pages state ""File>New" menu select "Arduino project" once more I havent got these descriptions available to me however Clicking "File> VM logo "Open Progect" immediately provides my open Arduino Sketchies file but clicking any one of the programs provides my old friend the message box stating " Unable to create........................................etc".

So I'm getting there but O' so very slowly. Can you help in this matter now, P L E A S E?

Chris

Hi,

The link I gave you to the documentation clearly states to use "File>New>Project" and shows the images of the dialog that opens when you do that. The feature is a relatively new feature and some docs don;t mention it yet but it is optional...

It is okay to use "File>New>Sketch Project" and I agree it makes sense for many users. I asked you to use an alternative method simply to prove your installation is correct.

The problem you are having with "File>New>Sketch Project" is a permissions problem as stated earlier. I think there is some confusion with the sketchbook location and your windows permissions configuration which is unrelated to atmel studio and visual micro.

1)

I suggest you clear/remove the path that you have specified for the Visual Micro sketchbook location this will remove confusion for you. Then we will use the same setting as the arduino ide and we will have less to talk about Smiley

2)

If you continue to have a problem after removing the sketchbook folder from Visual Micro then I believe if you create AND SAVE a new sketch in the Arduino you would have a problem with permissions?

Thanks

Must confess that the Sketchbook position in D; was chosen at a time when I could not seem to gain permission to save in C:\PF.,\Arduino. As related earlier I have now have those permissions so I will move Sktchbook to C:\PF.,\Arduino and I will let you know what happens.

I did load up your getting started link but didn't notice any difference from the one I was using. Apologoies. I will print it out and use that instead of the one that I have in current use.

Many thanks, Chris S.

Tim,

I have finally found the definitive answer to my issues.

During attempts to do this and that I decided to back refer to directory addresses that Atmel Studio (AS.,) was refering. In so doing I also decided to uninstall my Arduino IDE [Ex., Adafruit]. Having done so I downloaded in 'free fall' as it were, the Arduibo IDE., all as the request in Atmel in Tools>Options>Applications and Locations.

In short; I found:
One of the Arduino downloads had landed up in C:\Program Files. Nothing suspicious in that you may say, but hang on,so did I; but for heavenns sake aren't all our Program Filess maintained in c:\Program Files (x86) in Win 8.x. Well I never so they are too.
I deleted everything to do with Atmel & Arduino in c:\P_F and  then went into Atmel Studio and re configured eveything into C:\P_F (x86) and Bingo every thihg works, straight out of the box exactly as it should.
So now I feel a little bit less like the dummy I was and more like the newby that i am.
Thank you for all your nagging and help, I am sure that without your help I would still be floundering about just as I am attempting to write programs. My advise: Don't become an administrator of programmers; you would be sure to run into me and my kind............for sure.

Thanks,
Chris
