Problem with Visual Studio installation in Microchip Studio

I'm having a problem when attempting to install Visual Micro tool extension from within Microchip Studio (v7.0.2594). I'm following the YouTube tutorial for online extension install but the process stalls at "Downloading" dialog box.

Separately, I've downloaded "Visual.Micro.Microchip.Studio_7.vsix" to my download folder, but somewhere I read that an install outside of Mchip Studio is not recommended.

Could someone possibly advise please? Many thanks.

The install from the VSIX file should work normally, if you right click the VSIX and select the Open With > Microsoft VSIX Installer, it should complete as expected.

Thank you for the quick reply. VMicro is now installed within Mchip Studio and I can start the trial evaluation.

I've been evaluating VMicro trial at home, within Visual Studio Community 2017 and a J_link Edu debugger. I like it a lot, and plan to buy a license for personal use.

I would like to convince my employer to buy some VM licenses for Arduino-based rapid prototyping projects at work. However, the purchase of several full commercial Visual Studio 2022 licenses might be an obstacle. That is why I'm evaluating Microchip Studio 7 as a low-cost option, because we already use it and have several ATMEL-ICE hardware debuggers.  However, I recognize that Microchip Studio is not receiving updates and is possibly near end-of-life, so it may not be the best long-term solution.

My question is:  if I persuade management to buy Visual Studio to support a wider range of future Visual Micro projects, then will two different installed versions of VMicro (Atmel Studio and VS 2022) happily coexist on the same PC?

Glad to hear you are up and running and looking into using Visual Micro for work and home.

Visual Micro will run side by side on as many versions as needed on a single machine (VS2017/VS2019/Microchip Studio/VS2022).

The licenses are separate between VS2017/VS2019/Microchip Studio, to the VS2022 license, but if you contact us with your requirements when you are ready to purchase the Commercial Licenses we will be able to assist.
